This shouldercloth is an example of the ragi hotang (rattan design) style. It is marked by a striped and stippled ikat with multi-coloured borders rendered in supplementary weft. There are many variations of this design throughout the Toba region, although this was probably from Samosir which preferred a more minimalist design. Worn mostly by men as shouldercloth and more rarely as hipcloth, this was the second most preferred ritual textile.
