James Herbert Veitch (1868-1907) was a well-known English nursery man and orchid grower. The tour was undertaken with the object of obtaining a more adequate conception of the vegetation in the regions visited. The greater part of the results were first published in "The Gardener's Chronicle" of 1893 and 1894. This book is an example of the natural history writings of the 19th century. In addition to the text, the wealth of illustrations are particularly important – especially as it contains the description of Singapore Botanic Gardens.
