This is a print from Hugo V Pedersen's book, Door den Oost-Indischen Archipel, which charted his travels in the East Indian Archipelago. The print was based on an actual sketch of a Chinese opium den in Singapore, which is presented as a dark, mystical place. Pedersen was a Danish artist who travelled to the Far East, including Singapore, in 1895.
