"Self-Portrait with Lens Cap On" is a work Johnny Manahan exhibited when he was recognized as one of the Thirteen Artists in the 1972 batch of awardees at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Reflecting Manahan’s sense of humor, the work consists of an all-black surface with the film’s brand name and photo number and was originally shown as a group of 36 (one film roll). Manahan was experimenting with photography at that time, distinguishing conceptual photography from typical picture-making of the period.
