This hand printed cotton thaalposh or large dish cover originates from the Deccan region. It would have been used to cover dishes during religious festivals by Deccani Muslims, both sunnis and shiyas. The kalamkari print shows not only the traditional floral designs and red-ochre colours, but also incorporates four sections of calligraphy, highlighting the textile’s use in ritual. The kalamkari printing can be attributed to the south Indian centre of Masulipatnam.
