Tabled is a collection of 50 ceramic plates inscribed with everyday Malaysian and Indonesian scenes in a way intended to mimic the blue adornments found on fine china. The inscriptions of each of the ceramic plates are images extracted from film archives. Tabled is rife with citational qualities, relating to both the history of porcelain production and an anthropological film history; and its excellence stems from its ability to flawlessly amalgamate, and resurrect in the minds of its viewers the histories of the two mutually distinct genres in a cohesive artistic work which detracts from neither. The ceramics Yee showcases is indicative of the middle-ground scenario where cultural amalgamation has gone horribly wrong – drawing a clear parallel to the kitschy souvenirs available for purchase on overly commercialized beaches in Asia such as Patong Beach, Hạ Long Bay, amongst others.
