This pair of slipper faces is embroidered with gold wrapped thread using a technique known as tekat timbul. This is a method where two needles secure a flat silver wire would back and forth over cotton padding. The slipper faces are embroidered with bird and flower motifs. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
