Woolen caps were worn commonly in the northern mountainous regions of India by both men and women. The use of fine pashmina wool was restricted to the upper classes, due to the rarity of the wool. This cap has been woven in the kanikar style, which lends itself to weaving fine patterns in wool, and considered a prized craft. The paisley pattern on the cap is another typical element of Kashmiri weaving.
