This Buddha figure is seated in the padmasana or full lotus posture and is shown wearing a shawl draped over flowing robes. The downcast eyes, serene smile and meditative pose convey a sense of calm. The Buddha has a bright red ushnisha (cranial protuberance), which stands out prominently against the blue-painted hair curls. The use of lacquer provided a protective coating for the wood sculpture while the application of gold leaf gave the figure a glowing countenance, which would have simulated one of the thirty-two marks/signs of the Buddha.
