During the Japanese Occupation period, there was an acute shortage of food and other daily essentials, which were often available only at designated ration points on specific dates. To obtain such rations, the consumer will often have to first obtain a purchasing ticket or ration card. Should rations run out, the consumer has no choice but to pay to exorbitant prices at black markets for basic items such as coffee and cigarettes.
