sofA sonAA shows Tang’s hand growing bigger and bigger in front of the Union Jack. The Chinese calligraphy characters read 近 山 远 水, meaning near to the mountain, far from the water. Here the mountain is artistic success, for which he stayed in the UK, while water represents his home in Singapore. His hand is nearing that mountain, yet there is a struggle within him. Tang, of course, chose to return to Singapore in 1988 and continues to commute between the 2 cities today.
