This man and woman in Javanese dress probably dates to the early to mid-19th century, a time of growing popular interest in the colonial territories within the Western world. They represent "social types" – here perhaps an aristocratic couple from one of the ports of the northern coast of Java. The costumes appear to be Javanese, of the early to mid-19th century, in the style of the north coast ports of the island. The female figure wears a typical baju panjang (long coat) and sarong, with a shoulder-cloth. The male wears a tight-fitting coat with decorative brocade collar and cuffs, a style probably initially borrowed from European military uniforms. His batik headcloth is folded into a headdress known as a "blangkon".
