This local entertainment magazine by Singapore Broadcasting Corporation features one of its popular TV dramas in Chinese. The Awakening was Singapore’s first blockbuster series produced to commeorate the nation’s 25th National Day. Spanning over half a century, this two-part drama chronicled the lives of a group of Chinese immigrants who settled in Singapore between 1915 and 1949. It was a big success and attracted some 822,000 viewers, particularly among the Singaporean Chinese whose real-life experiences were mirrored on the screen. Lead actors Xiang Yun and Huang Wenyong went on to become celebrities.
