A Sketcher’s Tour Round the World

‘A Sketcher’s Tour Round the World’ was written and illustrated in 1854. The book contains the Robert Elwes’ impressions and observations, including an illustration of Singapore. He describes Singapore as a place with a multitude of different ethnic peoples, drawn in to trade. He also includes several tidbits of what life was like then, such as the practice of selling pineapple as street food, and the presence of tigers on the island.
