This stylized pair are in the simha-vyala (lion form) of yali. Yali is a mythical beast, most often represented as a lion, sometimes with the head of an elephant or dog. Yalis are stronger than any of these animals, however, and are considered guardian figures, being most often placed at the entry ways and pillars of temples in South India.
