The model portrays a Javanese wedding procession, probably in one of the key ports on the coast of Java, very possibly Batavia or Surabaya. This model is believed to have been exhibited at one of the many colonial and trade exhibitions organised in the mid to late 19th century, probably in Holland. Before travel to distant lands was accessible to most ordinary people, models and dioramas were a way for exhibition visitors to experience, at least second hand, “exotic” locations and ways of life.
