"This book, edited by Allister MacMillan, contains information on various countries in ‘the far east’. It was published in 1923. It contains information on Singapore, and tells us that Singapore was a ‘great commercial emporium and shipping centre’, and approximately seventh on the list of ports in the world. It also mentions the Raffles hotel and its amenities, which even then were luxurious. Each room was furnished with ‘its own telephone, bath-room, and conveniences’ and even possessed an electric lift."
