Photo with Mr Gwee Choon Gui (魏春贵 or Wei Chun Gui) holding the banner at a ceremony (13 June 1961)

This photograph was taken on 13 June 1961 during a fund raising event carried out by Sin Sai Hong Opera Troupe (新赛凤剧团) . A newspaper article kept by the family reported on the event and it was indicated that the funds raised were for the St. John Ambulance Team (为圣约翰救伤队举行义演). Mr Gwee is holding a banner which indicated the following information: 为河水山火灾筹款,南洋报社,北马办事处 (fund-raising for Bukit Ho Swee, Nanyang Siang Pau, North Malaysia branch). The backdrop also indicated Bee Kong Chye Goldsmith (美光斋金庄) on the left, who is a regular sponsor of the troupe. This photograph is significant as it sheds light on the diverse roles of the troupe in commercial as well as philanthropic activities. The troupe was first established in 1910 using another name and was performing gaojiaxi (高甲戏) back then. The troupe changed its name to “Sin Sai Hong” in 1936 and changed to performing gezaixi (歌仔戏) which was gaining popularity in the 1930s. It is the oldest Hokkien Opera Troupe in Singapore. The Sin Sai Hong collection donated to the National Museum also consists of old photographs, certificates and costumes.
