The depiction of Rama’s court shows Rama with Sita sitting on his left knee. He is surrounded by his brothers, with Hanuman sitting at his feet and other minor members of his court in the foreground. Tanjore artists often provided a canopy or archway in the painting as a framing device, a method harking back to earlier Vijayanagara mural and paintings from which the Tanjore style was derived. As with other Tanjore paintings, all the figures are dressed ornately but the painting style has moved away from the earlier naturalism of the Company school and reverted back to a flattened perspective reminiscent of earlier Hindu art.
