These double-sided blanc de chine cuboids appear to depict vignettes of opera or literary scenes. Set within the two slab-constructed, stage-like boxes are four different scenes featuring figures on horseback, ladies, and warriors as well as finely-detailed architectural backdrops. These are framed within borders representing stylised tiles with bird, foliage, and antique vessel motifs. Figural depictions within such theatrical settings are rarely seen in blanc de chine porcelain produced at the Dehua kilns, and provide an indication of the stories that were popular at that time.
