This long waist cloth or kain panjang is typical of Lasem, on the northern coast of Java. It dates to roughly 1910 and appears to depict a celebratory procession. Numerous musicians of various types and bearers carrying what appear to be gifts advance in long alternating rows across the centerfield. Large, elaborate upper class homes dot the landscape. Lasem was one of the main commercial batik producing cities on the northern coast of Java in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was most well known for the strong and vibrant red colour its dyers were credited with producing. However, unlike its counterparts of the period, Pekalongan and Cirebon, batik production slowly tapered off in Lasem and has completely died out today.
