As with most cultures, wedding garments represent possibly the most elaborate dress of the Peranakan community. While the wedding garments of the Peranakan Chinese community of Southeast Asia up till the early 20th century consistently reflect strong Chinese influence, there are also important regional, for example Singapore/Malacca, Penang, Sumatra, Java, stylistic differences. In this period, the Peranakan Chinese bride and groom would wear a few different robes for the different days of the wedding; resulting thus in the wide variety of wedding garments. The pink robe features finely embroidered Chinese auspicious motifs such as phoenix and peonies. Rabbit fur trimming is also characteristic of the Penang version, even though this feature is incongruent with Penang weather. Varying accounts attribute this to an imitation of Chinese opera garments, or inspiration from Northern Manchu winter court robes.
