Mohammad Din Mohammad was born in Malacca, Malaysia in 1955 and trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts between 1973 and 1976. He was an active member of the Modern Art Society and Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya in Singapore. This is one of only two known self-portraits of Mohammad Din Mohammad. The artist used his fingers to apply the oil paint onto the surface of the canvas, occasionally also using a palette knife. Images of the artist’s wife Hamidah Jalil and his younger daughter are incorporated in the depiction of his eyes. Wittily titled “Split NFS (Not For Sale) Personality”, it is stoistic and typically a Din, at once epitomizing the struggle to differentiate, incorporate, resist, actualise and contest cultural metaphors from different genres and origins that made up his life.
