This tureen is shaped and painted with polychrome enamels to simulate a boar's head. While striving for a sense of naturalism (evident in the fine brushstrokes delineating the boar’s hair), the artisan also imbued the piece with a whimsical quality through the use of bright colours. The streak of neon yellow above the eyes adds visual interest and contributes toward making this vessel a bold centerpiece on the dining table. The accompanying stand is painted with rococo-style decoration in a famille rose palette, reflecting European taste of that period.Tureens fashioned in the form of birds and animals, such as geese, ducks, and fish, were dining vessels popular among the European elites during the second half of the 18th century. The porcelain pieces made in China were modelled after European pottery examples, the earliest of which were believed to have been faience ones made at the Strasbourg factory in France around 1750.
