Brush

This brush is an example of an accessory used by Peranakan women. It shows how in the 20th century, many Peranakans adapted the lifestyles of the Europeans they came into contact with. This adaptation included the use of perfumes and accessories. The silver marks on this brush indicated that it was made in Birmingham by Adie Brothers Ltd in 1955 and 1956. This period coincided with the increased earning power of more Singaporean women, both Peranakan and non-Peranakan, which enabled them to purchase and use imported perfumes, cosmetics and other beauty products.
