This pair of bed window covers is decorated with embroidered motifs of phoenix and peonies. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol in the Chinese culture representing beauty, grace, high virtue, the bride and the Empress. Likewise, peonies are auspicious symbols that symbolise spring, love, beauty and good fortune. It also features a deer which symbolises wealth and achievement. This bed window covers may have been used to decorate a Peranakan wedding bed. Wedding beds were one of the largest pieces of furniture in wealthy Peranakan families, and could be part of the wedding trousseau.
