The baju panjang is a long and loose fitting tunic. This makes it suitable in the hot, humid climate of the Southeast Asian region as it allowed for ventilation, while also projecting a modest appearance. It could be worn over a sarong or skirtcloth. This piece is possibly made from cotton organdie. Its decorative designs include bright pink and purple floral motifs as well as motifs of pigeons in flight with a mail envelope in their beaks. These are set against a lime green background. This pigeon and mail motifs reflect a Western influence in Peranakan culture. Such fusion of Western motifs and local culture is prevalent in Peranakan material culture, ranging from clothes to furniture and jewellery. With the introduction of the aesthetically more appealing kebaya in the early 20th century, the baju panjang began to fall out of favour with younger Nonyas.
