This jacket has a Chinese-style mandarin collar and edges lined with piping made from gold-wrapped thread. The whole piece is constructed of purple silk brocade with a pattern comprising floral motifs within a lattice. It is finished with gold buttons.Silk garments were worn mainly by the aristocracy in Laos, so it is likely that this jacket was part of formal court dress in the early to mid 20th century. Such elaborate silk brocade fabrics were probably imported from China and India. The tradition of dressing as royalty for an occasion such as a wedding continues today.
