Boom Box Liberty

Born in 1981 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Terra Bajraghosa studied visual communication design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI), Yogyarkarta. He has held solo exhibitions and has taken part in group exhibitions in his home country as well as in Korea and UK. Widely influenced by pop culture, Bajraghosa uses the nostalgic aesthetics of pixel animation and mass communication to comment on the current political and social climate in Indonesia. In ‘Boom Box Liberty’, Bajraghosa revisits and revises ‘Liberty Leading the People’, the iconic 19th-century painting by French artist Eugene Delacroix which has come to stand for the heroism and ideals associated with the French Revolution. Bajraghosa updates the spirit of the work with his own playful interpretation. Set in the present day, Liberty who is presented as a pixelated image, holds a modern-day boom box instead of a rifle as depicted in the original painting. With this re-interpretation, Bajraghosa suggests that the revolution in the streets is still relevant today, albeit driven by youth and popular culture fighting for freedom and independence.
