Jar with impressed decoration

This large round-bottomed jar was made by coiling and paddle-beating the walls. The uneven shape resulted from warping during firing. It has four lug handles and impressed leaf-shaped motifs with elephants around the shoulder covered with a thin runny brown glaze. Although not made as export wares, at least one example has beeen found in Java. Active trade took place during the Majapahit period bewteen Lower Burma and Java and it is quite possible that the kilns at Twante, which are known to have produced stamped wares, made jars such as this.
