This brown teakwood chair is one of a pair that originally came from the family of prominent Malaccan businessman Tan Hoon Guan. The back of the chair is carved to imitate English Chippendale furniture which was very popular among Peranakans during the early 20th century. Rattan seats allowed for better air circulation in the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. Tan Hoon Guan was a successful businessman in the late 19th century who was in charge of large development projects in the Java Lane and Lorong Jambatan areas of Malacca, most prominently the Kampung Java bridge across the Malacca river
