This blue and white dish is decorated at the centre with a scene of Christ on the Cross. A plaque above the cross is inscribed with 'INRI'. The letters INRI are initials for the Latin title that Pontius Pilate had written over the head of Jesus Christ on the cross. It translates to English as "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". A geometric pattern decorates the rim of the dish. To imitate the appearance of blue and white porcelain, a tin-oxide glaze has been applied over the reddish-brown earthenware body to create a white outer layer for the blue painted decoration. Low-fired Delftware such as this example is also unable to reproduce the translucency of ‘true’ porcelain.
