Shoulder cloth

This is an example of a piece of batik textile used as a selendang (shoulder cloth). Such textiles were popular among Peranakans in Java and perhaps Sumatra, but not so with the Straits Chinese Nonyas. The decorative motifs on this textile include large leaf patterns set against a lime green background. Batik is a technique for decorating plain, woven fabric, using molten wax applied or drawn onto the cloth. Through repeated applications of wax and dye, complex and intricate patterns and designs can be created.
