The national flag of Singapore was first adopted in 1959, when Singapore attained self-government. It remained as the state flag when Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963 and when Singapore became fully independent in 1965. The red symbolises equality and universal brotherhood, while white stands for purity and virtue. The crescent moon denotes an ascending young nation and the five stars represent the nation’s five ideals: democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
