The gold hairpin is a very fine piece made of solid 22K gold and set with diamonds. It is a hairpin worn of a style worn by Peranakan Chinese women in Singapore and Malacca. Hairpins in solid gold set with diamonds are very rare today. They were often only worn by wealthy Peranakan women. Many were melted down when Peranakan Chinese women changed their dressing from the traditional long tunic (baju panjang) to the kebaya. Hairpins like these were no longer used with the new style of dressing.
