Seated high on a rock in the meditation pose ('dhyanasana'), this figure of Guanyin has a somewhat elaborate appearance with a necklace of large beads and voluminous amounts of drapery. The folds of the robe have a stiff appearance as if moulded from a stiffly carved prototype. The hands are similarly stiff in their modelling and gaps remain where they were inserted into the sleeves. The glaze is a distinctively warm pinkish tone perhaps the result of oxidation during firing.Dehua, located on the southeast coast of Fujian province, is well known for its production of white porcelain, known to Europeans as 'blanc de Chine'. The earliest Dehua porcelain was produced as early as the 14th century but the production and quality of these porcelain peaked around the 17th and 18th centuries.
