Rediffusion programmes were extremely popular with the masses in the 1950s. Overseas Rediffusion, a subsidiary of Rediffusion London, operated and sold advertising time and programmes in Singapore. People flocked to coffeeshops to listen to Rediffusion programmes in various Chinese dialects. The Singapore Family Planning Association (SFPA) used this to its advantage by broadcasting in the major Chinese dialects on programmes such as Woman’s Hour, which discussed issues such as abortion, housing and health.
