A diplomat during the Warring Stages Period (476-221BC) when imperial China was divided into seven states, Su Qin was credited with uniting six states against the aggression of the State of Qin. A separate story is portrayed in the background of this tableau, which tells the tale of the ill-fated marriage between a celestial and a mortal. Originally called Tiger Balm Gardens, Haw Par Villa was built on Pasir Panjang Road by Aw Boon Haw in 1937. A prominent businessman and philanthropist, Aw had set up the gardens with the intention of educating the public about Chinese culture.
