Document concerning the suit between Kam Boon Poh and Toh Teng Cheow

This is a document issued on 30 April 1881 concerning the suit between Kam Boon Poh (plaintiff) and Toh Teng Cheow, an infant who was represented by his guardian Oon Syn Choe (defendant). It states that Oon Syn Choe, clerk to the Singapore Gas Company Limited, consented to be appointed as the guardian of the defendant Toh Teng Cheow. It is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
