Haw Par Villa entrance

Designed by the late architect, Mr Ho Kong Yew, this entrance of traditional Chinese style bears the inscription 'Tiger Balm Garden', the original name of Haw Par Villa. The garden was named after the renowned product under the trademark Tiger brand, a remedy for aches and pains that was successfully marketed in Singapore and around the region during the early 20th century by Aw Boon Haw – the founder of Haw Par Villa – and his younger brother, Aw Boon Par. A prominent businessman and philanthropist, Aw had set up the gardens in 1937 with the intention of educating the public about Chinese culture, and this could be seen in the wide range of statues and sculptures on display at Haw Par Villa that portray themes from Chinese legend and folklore.
