Shiva dancing before Parvati, surrounded by Devas

In Indian tradition, Shiva is known as the Cosmic Dancer (Nataraja) who destroys evil and creates new life. He is seen here dancing before Parvati, his consort amidst an audience of celestials and mortals. His pale complexion appears more human than the superhuman representations usually seen. His stance is animated as if dancing to a vigorous rhythm. His matted hair, snake and tiger skin seem to sway with his body. The shoulder cloth has already flown off and lies on the ground before Parvati’s feet. The scene is set in the mountain range of the Himalayas, on Mount Kailasha, their earthly abode.
