Child labour was common in the past, when education was not compulsory and poor families would forego schooling for their children. Children would be seen hawking wares in the street or working in farms. This moving scene depicts a boy in his early teens, shoeless and clad in tattered clothes, pausing from his labours to look longingly at the two boys leaving for school.
