Ceremonial hanging

This large ceremonial hanging, known as ‘palepai’, is decorated with supplementary weft technique. It features two rows of female figures in blue and red alternately, wearing the buffalo horn headdress, known as the ‘siger’, which represents the unmarried marital status. Palepai were hung at ceremonies of the life-cycle such as such as initiation into adulthood, weddings and funerals. They were specific to the Paminggir people in the coastal area of South Lampung, and were the prerogative of the aristocrats.
