This pendant is made from a medallion with the tugra (calligraphic emblem) of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Resad, with fittings added in Aceh, Indonesia, after the return of the pilgrim from the haj. The fittings depict phoenixes, and the coin has suasa - a treatment of gold that gives it a pinkish-red tinge. The two pilgrimage cities of Mecca and Medina were under the control of the Ottomans, although at times symbolic, from the 13th to the early 20th centuries.
