Figure of Prince Siddhartha Gautama

This well cast bronze figure depicts Prince Siddhartha Gautama leaving the palace in his cart drawn by two horses. The wheels and the Prince are gilded and the cart rests on a rectangular hoop. This Pagan style of metalwork of Buddhist images seem to be representative of techniques that is unique to Burma. Small works like this were made by provincial metalsmiths of north Burma to depict major events from the life of Buddha in a clear and simple way. Most of the scenes are derived from the Jataka or the Story of the Buddha.
