A radio pager

A pager is a telecommunications device that transmits short messages. The first consumer pager was introduced in 1950. Before mobile phones became popular in the 1990s, pagers were widely used for personal communication.A radio pager such as the one here is a compact radio receiver that emits an alerting tone when the receiver’s tone-sensing circuitry is activated. In Singapore, the radio paging service was introduced in 1973 as an island-wide automatic contact service.
