This silk skirt cloth or 'sampot hol' is patterned with weft (horizontal) resist-dyed threads. This piece has finely woven patterns in in yellow, blue and green against a red ground. It is decorated with simple weft ikat ('hol') motifs in the shape of tears. Up until mid 19th century, Khmer textiles with elaborate patterns were also highly favoured by the Thai aristocracy as they formed an important part of their ceremonial costumes. Today silk sampot patterned with weft ikat are worn by Khmer women for festivals.
