This cylindrical box with 'yun' or colour-engraved work is typical of the Shan states. It comprises a single inner tray covered in plain red lacquer and a deep lid that overlaps with the mid section of the base. There are minor bands of bamboo zig zag reliefs around above and below the main decorative frieze on the outer wall.This type of lacquer ware was made by master craftsmen in the late 19th century in Laihka in the Shan States of Burma. Their best work was given a royal gifts to the Emperor of China and other visiting dignitaries.
