Portrait of two Malay women, a little girl and a little boy

The two women in the photograph are wearing the ‘sarong kebaya’, consisting of a blouse over a wrap-around cloth. The little girl, seen on the left of the photograph, is wearing a ‘baju kurung’ or loose tunic worn over a wrap-around cloth, while the little boy is wearing a short-sleeved button-down shirt and shorts. The Malays migrated to the Malay Archipelago between 2,000 and 5,000 BC. There are a variety of sub-groups, such as the Peninsular Malay, Javanese, Boyanese, Bugis and others, within the Malay community. Most Malays are Muslims and speak the Malay language. Malay customs and traditions originated from Hindu beliefs but were eventually modified in accordance to Islamic teachings.
