Erected in 1887, the Raffles Library and Museum - administered as a combined institution until 1955 - was the predecessor to the National Museum of Singapore. The museum was officially opened by Sir Frederick Weld, Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1880-1887. The purpose for which this institution was established was to bring together objects of historical and archeological value, mainly from the Eastern Archipelago region and particularly from Singapore.
